Default discrimination

probably an often asked question but in high trashy areas is it smart to put a lot or a little discrimination? i think there are a LOT of bottle caps and foil. what are you bound to miss?

Over here I would still keep the Discrim down.....usually goodies hiding amongst the trash, you will probably need to turn your sensitivity back otherwise your detector wil be going mad.

It depends on what you are hunting for. You'll find that most folks here would recommend a smaller sniper coil.

I find that if you are just looking for coins and nothing else you can discriminate out most of the junk stuff (BUT) you will likely loose nickles and most gold jewlery. It is a real trade off. Dimes and quarters and such will hit on just about whatever you discriminate out. But there is a whole lot of good stuff in between that you will miss.

Dig it all...Yes it's a pain, but as others have said you will find some cool stuff...When you get tired of digging pull tabs and junk that is when I call it a day and head for the barn...You will find some good stuff for sure...Happy Hunting...Buster,,....

The use of basic discrimination as in tuning out everything below a certain setpoint is a very inefficient way hunt in my opinion. We can dig everything and is the by far the best discriminator but can be very impractical or we can have detectors that in some way or another help defense against the junk with as little masking as possible.

Using a single tone detector without a meter at a trashy site leaves no choice but choosing the amount of targets your willing to dig. Add tone id and you should be able lower the disc setting and use the audio to help sort through the mess.

Now add on a good meter, tone id and small coil the discrimination is even more definitive.

The digital, tone id detectors have a more selective form of discrimination and combined with small coils can pick through the mincemeat trash with more efficiency but still need to dig iffy signals and remove junk to make better finds.

It's basically a defensive game when it comes to discrimination and the more we don't want to hear or see the less we find. Just a few thoughts. HH Bill
