I go to several a year and they're alot of fun. Coins are dropped into a slit in the ground and tokens are put in for other prizes or the more valuable coins.
All the ones I go to start around a marked (small flags) field or section of the beach. Once the horn blows to start it's a mad dash onto the hunt field to find as much as you can. The hunts usually are 30-45 minutes each and they're very competitive. Pinpointing skills are crucial, you want to get down and up and move on as fast as you can. The hunts that I've been to aren't really scored but the big winners are from tokens that are worth anywhere from a silver dollar or round to gold coins and metal detectors. There isn't really teaming up except when the hunt includes a "fun" hunt that is more of a game. You'll group up with 3-5 others and one at a time from each group will search the field until they find what it is (sometimes a playing card wrapped around a coin) and the best hand wins or just different denominations of coins and the highest amount wins Each member of the group will get something, usually a silver round or Eagle. Native stuff found is yours to keep. Lightweight detectors are best for these hunts and ones with frequency shifts are helpful because the hunters are close together.

Ya, what Minelab said is right, they are ALOT of fun, I used to go to quite a few. Only now with Gold and Silver as high as it is, I imagine alot of clubs will be seeding alot of clad. Also most of them cost You some bucks. Especially if they have several a day and some for two days. You meet alot of Great People too. Hope You go to it.
