Default cemeteries

Good morning all. I was wondering if it is legal, politically correct to detect in an old cemetary?

I can't tell you whether it is legal or not but I do have a personal opinion, for what its worth.

I think most of the MDing community feels they are taboo. Some family members may leave personal items for the deceased on the gravesite, religious medals, toys and the like, and I think we, as detectorists, have a moral obligation to allow items left on purpose in a cemetary to remain there.

I guess I would try to put myself in the shoes of the person who put it there and ask myself how I would feel if someone took something I had left. Most of us entered into this hobby to find lost items.

When I lived in New York, there were a few cases of grave robbing of Civil War casualties in rural cemetaries to look for artifacts. I would not tolerate that if I knew of someone doing it. But that's at a much different level.

I realize that things get removed and cemetaries are vandalized but this is a controversial area within the MDing community and I can only offer my opinion.

Default Thanks for the honest response

I really appreciate the advice. Cemeteries are a no no. If you don't know, ask. I really enjoy this community.

I would not hunt in a graveyard for sure. We used to hunt a beach area that had a graveyard way up on the hill. Didn't get too close to that for sure. Don't think it would be right to hunt there..Bad Karma....It's just what I think...Buster...

if i was visiting a deceased family member and i saw someone digging up things, i wouldn'd like it. so i wouldn't hunt cemetaries, just for the moral reasons.

I hunt old churches that have cemetary's beside them, but I stay in the church yard.

That is a personal thing with most plp, and i would not do it but if you have no problem with it than go for it..Deff get permision first becuse most cemeteries are private property.. State and fed owned ones would be a big no-no...
