Hello Hvman,

I wish I were able to help ya out there... Have you done a google search on that machine? You may be able to find someone with a online manual.. However I do know that That's definately one of Whites Older models... Did you Buy it? If not You may be better buying a Garrett Ace 250... But I'll let the Seasoned Whits guys Chime in.. to try and help..

Also :: You should go to the Whites website and Inquire about it there..

I think you can post a question to them and they'll get back to you pretty darn fast... Whites is an Excellent Company...

Welcome to TQ..

I found a post from a couple years ago From another site... Hope this helps...

"I was wondering if anyone out there still uses a coinmaster 5500D?"... There might be a few (very few) still using the 5500/D on what you might call a regular basis, but few who are really keeping up with modern-day detectors and detecting.

"If so , can anyone educate me on this unit,..."... The 5500/D was introduced in 1985, at the same time the 6000 Di Pro was introduced.

In 1984 White's offered the Coinmaster 5000/D Series 3 for a suggested retail of $399.95. It was a 4-mode unit with a signal intensity/battery check meter and used the drop-in 4-AA battery holder.

In 1985, it was 'replaced', so to speak, by the 5500/D Series 3 which also retailed for $399.95 AND now offered the rechargeable battery system and Coin Depth reading of the former 6000/D Series 3 (from '84). In short, they dropped the 5000/S Series 3 and basically renamed the 6000/D Series 3 as the 5500/D Series three to reduce the number of '6000' labeled models in their line-up since they had the 6000/Di and 6000/D in 1984, and were just introducing the 6000/Di Pro.

I think the required sweep speed of the 5500/D & former 6000/D was just a touch slower than that of the 5000/D models i the GEB Disc. mode.

"... like what the difference is between the 6000D and what the i in Di models mean."... The 6000/D, like the 5000/D and 5500/D was a "motion discriminator" in the GEB Disc. mode, and that's what the 'D' stood for. Discriminator.

The 'i' in 'Di' stands for "identification" noting that those models featured the VDI display meter. (Visual Discrimination Identification).

The 6000/D offered "coin Depth" reading, as did the 5500/D which replaced it, and the 6000/Di offered both Coin Depth reading as well as VDI (commonly referred to as TID or Target ID).

In 1986 they retained the '6000' label for the 6000/Di Pro which was released in April of 1985, but went to the new model name of 5900/Di to replace the 6000/Di which they had dropped briefly. The goal was to reduce the confusion between so many models with '6000' in their name.

The term "Pro" used in 1985 for the top-end 6000/Di Pro was used to indicate that it featured White's new Autotrac® circuitry, while the 6000/Di and 5900/Di had the manual GB control.

By Spring of 1988 the 5500/D was no longer in their catalog.

"I have found a 5500D at a fair price and would like to hear from someone who has used this machine."... Value and practicality of getting this unit would depend upon it's physical condition, any accessory coils that may come with it (it doesn't use any of the current or more recent coils), and just what you consider to be a "fair price' for it.

The obvious trend is to more current models that require a slower sweep speed, and that feature visual target ID. While many of us who are rather devoted to the hobby own and use a model or two that lacks Target ID, the vast majority of the hobbyists today prefer it, so take that into consideration. Also, consider the physical package of those older models. They were more fatiguing than those that use a 'S' rod design and have an armcup, etc.

Welcome to TQ, hvacman!

If you are seeking coins, jewelry and the like, the machine will give you good results. The technology has changed somewhat but what was a very good VLF (Very Low Frequesncy) machine then will still do a good job at finding targets today.

If that machine fits your budget, gets you started in the hobby and allows you to make some good finds, what more can you ask. Many of us have started with a basic machine to see how the hobby suits us. We don't know if we will have success, we don't know if we will find targets and we don't know if we want to dedicate the time to seeking.

This machine will help you make some decisions about whether you really like the hobby or not and if you want to upgrade to a newer, more expensive machine down the road.

Go out, practice, make some finds and see what you think in a couple months. In the meanwhile, research and learn to set yourself up for success and ask us any questions that come to mind.

Default White's is always a good choice

White's detectors always have done good for me. I have a White's XLT and I love it if my wife would let me I would upgrade to a DFX. I also have a Garrett Ace 250 a perfect learning metal detector. It does almost as good as my XLT it just lacks a little depth. (My oldest coins however were found with my ACE 250.)
