Default Digging holes

Guys, please bear with me.. I think I may break down and get a pinpointer because I don't want to destroy the old lawns i plan to search but until then...i dig a fair size hole and the coins always seem to be just off to the side. it wouldn't be so bad if the were consistently say, at the top of the coil, but thy are all over! My skill needs to increase. I thought of getting as close as i can and setting the coil down and digging right around the coil head, that way i can't miss. Any thoughts? Your advice as been right on so far

I would tape some on the back of some cardboard and practice pinpointing some...you will get better as you go..it takes a little time to get used to..I used to leave craters when I started, now it's all good..Practice and you will be fine...Buster......

Oh for sure use a pinpointer. They can and do help.

The coins taped to the back of cardboard works great also. Put them in random areas spaced apart. Flop the cardboard over and see how close you get. I used a dart to poke a hole through the board, Beale.
