Default Old White's any good to play with?

I'm looking at a couple of old Coinmasters. A 2h and a 5h geb.
Are these things still usefull for anything? I should be able to get them both for under $100.
Would they be too hard to use for my 12 almost 13 year old?

Thanks!
Ben

Hi Ben and welcome to the TQ forum.

I was about that age when I bought my first Coinmaster. They will catch on quick and enjoy them as I did

Thanks for the replies! I ordered the 2 for $80 shipped. Guess they will be fun to play with and neat to have something of that vintage to keep as a collectors item too. One thing neat about these two is they are hip mounted. Bet that makes the pole/coil really light. Also the newer 5 series may be a pretty nice machine...

Exclamation Coinmaster 5

I bought a new Coinmaster 5 Supreme in 1976. The word out was "if you don't like to dig, don't buy the 5" and they weren't kidding! I have dug many good targets with it and finally traded it in on the Eagle II when they were introduced, then a relic hunter friend snatched it up. The 5 is crazy about nails and wire, but that is reasonable since it was designed for the lumber industry to locate nails in trees before they were cut (they can make a chain saw blade break and become deadly) this also makes it a GREAT RELIC machine. This was not a real problem as you could learn to listen for the beep off each end of the nail or wire and pretty much know what was there. The crisp tone edges of coins could even help you tell if it was a dime or penny in the ground with practice. Listen to the tones for length, crisp or fading leading and trailing edges, chattering, double beep (quarters) etc. with practice you can 'name that coin'.

The Coinmaster 5 is a great machine and you just might get "out hunted" by your almost teen..

Thanks for the welcomes and the great info!

Well it may be here in the next couple days so I'll see what happens...I kind of expected that the 5 was more or less top of the line back then and this having the side mount may just make me have to use it some:-)
