Default Need Advice On Trashy Area

Howdy All! I am looking for some advice from all of you seasoned and not so seasoned detector people(is that what we are called? )

After some research into a twon nearby, I found that an area next to the river was the main area for commerce in the 1800's. Trappers and Indians would float down the river and buy and sell on the banks.

So, I thought that would be a great area for hunting. Now the problem! The area is heavily used by disrespectful folks who have trashed it. I have been there twice and spent the entire time digging aluminum cans that show as good coin tones.

Should I continue to search the site and dig all the targets? Or am I fighting a lost cause?

This has been very disappointing to me because this site has the potential for great finds.

Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated!

Hi Craig,

Look into getting a smaller coil. The smaller coils are great for picking out coins in between trash.

Good luck,

Thanks Greg, I tried that. My new Garrett has the smallest coil I can find! I wish people wouldn't trash places like that!

Default Might be a great find under that trash.

That would keep alot of folks from detecting it.

No never give up. I would try several thing at this location. Start out at the highest discrim and move down each round. After this take somone with you that has a totaly different detector they may have a nitch in theres sounds wierd i no but it has happen to me befor. I would also try at different times light rain dry day or even light snow. One thing is for sure though you will have to dig your share of trash in this area. You may have to dig 5 pull tabs for 1 coin but i have found if the area is as good as you say you will be rewared trust me

Thanks Will Lane
OH YEAH PS AS FAR AS ANOTHER DETECTOR I OPEN

I think I will go out there again and set my detector for "all metal" and dig it all. Maybe I can find enough aluminum cans to buy myself a MINELAB.

Default i find alot trash in the way of,

shell casing's,shotgun shells, moderen spent bullets, nails, wire etc for every relic I find. Only difference I have in coin hunting is less trash.

Look at the US beltplate on the ask Pappy section to see what a "hunted out" site gave up. Good finds are out there. Good luck.

I have a feeling that not many have hunted this site. For one thing, there are very few md'ers in the area. It is a relativily small town but it is old and was founded on oil. The town has a reputation because it had 16 saloons at one time for a town of 500.

I have met only one other person who used to metal detect and he says he would never do that area becasue of the trash, he is only interested in silver and gold.

I believe that my chances are great to pull some great finds out of the dirt in the area I just need to take the time to do it and dig every target I read.

Thanks for all the advice.
