Default Metorites

I am not sure these can be called treasures - but it’s what is getting me started in metal detecting. We ran across a meteorite about the size of a small melon - this was not found by the use of a metal detector. I was very impressed with the find - it now sits in a glass case in a senior member of the town I live in. I could not believe the fact that it was so heavy for being so small. My question is in using the metal detector what type of sounds or reading should I be looking for. We have a Meteorite creator close by and I will be looking there more fragments. I think most most of the meteorites are made up from Achondrite (basalts), Carbonaceous Chondrited (mantle and crust of terrestrial planets), Iron (primarily iron and nickel), and stony-iron (mixture of iron -stony material and 50% nickel-iron). The one that we found must of been iron and nickel as a small piece was removed and it looked like a chrome bumber.

Any help would be welcome.

Hey Coyote.....

That's cool you found a meteorite...just wanted to share this short story with you....I was reading the other day on the Internet that a farmer from Kansas found a 1400 pound meteorite in his field back in October. He was saying that the type of meteorite it was because of it's looks and makeup was worth between $20- $40 per gram! I caculated using the $40.00 per gram figure and estimated that the meteorite that was found.... worth over $2.5 million dollars!!!

Keep digging over there.....Meteorites are rare to find and they could be a BIG treasure!

Happy Hunting
John

John - that would be some find - I am surprised that no one here has located something of that nature - not as big - but something on a smaller scale - when the snow leave the ground - I have located a meteorite crater that I want to work on. We will see...

Talking Meteorites

One needs to hunt in All Metals to find these. Most of the discriminators will either ignore or null out on these. Although I have never found one I know that Keith Wills has and he can probably give better advise than me. Good Hunting!!!

Default Heard they are big money

Saw a show on PBS about a guy with a 4 wheeler towing a large PVC Pipe coil to find meteors in farm fields. They found one 10ft down. They were talking about huge values per pound (don’t recall exactly). There was also a segment about a boutique style shop selling meteors and fragments mounted or cut cross-section, all selling for high dollar amounts. Meteors can millions of years old and rich space enthusiasts will pay lots of money apparently. The cross sections looked cool too.
