Default long ago detector returning to the hobby, need advice about NiMh batteries

hello folks. my name is ken samson. i'm a full time RV traveler as well as a bookseller. i'm returning to the hobby after a 25 year absence. back then, i grew frustrated with the detector i was using [compass coin magnum, which i discovered this week my dad kept in his closet for me all these years, and still works fine.] because i am nearly totally deaf and could not at that time find a suitable headset to use. now, with the vibra-phone vibrating unit i recently learned about, i can do away with the headsets entirely and depend on that which i have always depended on in life: vibrations.

i've ordered a bounty hunter sharp shooter II from amazon during a recent $199 special, and am waiting for it to arrive. in the meantime, i'm gathering the other equipment i need for the hobby. i planned to buy some recharable NiMh 9v batteries to run the detctor and the vibra-phone, but upon reading the manual from bounty hunter for the SSII, i see they say to use ONLY alikoid batteries, nothing else.......

my question is this: why?? i don't want to be spending hundreds of dollars a year for disposables. has anyone used the NiMh recharables in their BH SSII model? any thoughts/advice?

ken

Default while i'm at it, a question about the compass coin magnum

one other thing - i'd love to get my hands on a manual for this coin magnum. my dad cannot find the one that came with the unit bought in the late 70s, and i'd like to try to see if i can utilize the CCM as a back-up.... or at least try it out and see what a $450 unit from ages ago can do in comparion to the $199 unit i got off Amazon...... i suspect with all the tuning requirements and knobs, switches and dials on CCM, i'll still be though!

Default NiMh

Hey Ken,
Not sure why you can't use NiMh in your detector but here is what I know about them.

+They are lighter than Nicads, They come in higher Mah,
-Can not be charged as fast a Nicads, use lower amps or they overheat
-They do not short, they open so if one cell goes bad you loose all voltage.
-They must be fully discharged to a safe level regulary or they will hold a memory.

Can you use Nicads?

Hope this helps, Stan
