Default places to look

Where are some good places to look? I have looked in the park and along the river but there is nothing, I hardly even get a beep.

Parks and rivers are a good start! The problem with hunting near a rivers edge can be that if the river is prone to flooding then items can either be washed away or they get buried really deep due to silt deposit! Look for swimming holes that people frequented in the past! The pics you posted of the finds in your back yard show that that is a good place to hunt! I really like hunting yards when I can get permission, but getting the permission can be difficult! Remember that researching where you live and want to hunt can really pay off!

If your going to do parks, check out the kid's play areas. Visit a park you want to detect on a busy weekend when there are lots of people around, not to detect, but to make a mental note of where people are gathering, sitting on the lawns or watching a ball game. Then go back and work those spots when you have the place more to yourself.
I recently drove by a Sunday afternoon soccer game and noticed that because it was hot most the people watching were sitting on the lawn under the trees. Went back a couple days later and cleaned $6 worth of change out of the area, alot of it was without digging, in about 45 minutes.
As the others have posted do your research. Find out the history of your area. Bob

Default where to hunt

If you are just getting into this hobby, start out in playground sand boxes. Dirt parking lots where people have parked vehicles for many years is another good starting place. Go to places where lots of folks congregate. If you are finding pull tabs, you likely will find valuables there as well.
Good luck,
Rob

It's all about research... yards of old houses are great, maybe you know someone in an older area? Also, look for old picnic areas, campgrounds, just about anywhere lots of people have gathered at some time.

Talk to older people. Also check out you local historical society. You can get great ideas there. An older person once told me about a small triangular patch of woods where a local church used to hold their Sunday School picnics. That turned out to be a good coin shooting spot.

(any) Public land is also a good start, use a GIS map and you're set...Good luck...!

Grasshopper had stated in a previous post..."try typing in "your county" GIS. often there is a tax parcel search where you can click on a property and it will tell you who pays the taxes for it."
