Default Coils

Hi everyone. I have 2 coils with my new Ace 250. I was wondering when/if the larger one is to be used or should I use it all the time? I have it on there now instead of the smaller one. I went into the yard and the thing went nuts so I have some work to do I think. I didnt find anything but the detector went from junk all the way up to 50cents. Not a clue what I am doing yet as this is my first day of detecting.

The smaller coil is great in trashy areas. You can work your way around trash to find coins and stuff. I bought a 4 1/2" sniper coil and have never put the larger coil back on. The sniper is great for pin pointing too. The larger coil will go a little deeper but not a real noticable difference. Also if you are trying to cover a very large area the larger coil might be handy.
Try hunting in the jewelry mode and about four or five notches on the sensitivity. Try the back yard again and see if it settles down, if not look up. Are you directly below some power lines?
Also just throw down a few coins and run the detector over them and see the different sounds it makes and how it looks on the read out. Get over one coin and go into the pin pointing mode and figure out where the coil is over the coin. Practice this by hiding coins under a piece of cardboard and practice until you are good at locating the coin. This will save you a lot of digging when you go out and do some real hunting.
If there is a park or school play ground near you the kind with sand or gravel around the toys go there and see if you find anything. Usually you will and it is very easy to dig.
Good luck and we will be looking forward to hearing about all your great finds.
