Default Suggestions for a Used Metal Detector

I am interested in mainly using my metal detector on the beach. My questions are:
- Is there a tremendous difference in the newer detectors and the older ones for beach detecting?
- For my use and budget would one of the older units serve my purpose?

Thanks, LCP

Default Used Vintage metal detector on the beach?

It depends on what make and model that you use. Some models can tune to the salt water conditions especially in the wet sand areas and some do not! It would help to know what exactly that you have? Of course, if you are a Newbie I would suggest that you buy it new or used from a local dealer who can give you much needed support. But if you are a Veteran you may do very well with any type of detector because of your past experience and know-how. If money is a big problem, still buy it from a dealer. Most take trade-ins and offer them to their customers at a reduced rate from the original price! Also many offer Layaway! GOOD LUCK......

I have to beg to differ on the Excal vs. Tigershark being the same performancewise. The Tigershark is a good detector for the money but cannot do what the Excal can with the 10" coil and or the 12" Sunray coil. Not here on CT beaches anyway. Maybe its different elsewhere but I can't see how. If you understand the Excal its hard to beat for VLF detectors.
I can answer the "What do you consider junk" question. The Viper and Trident are Chinese junk. Sold to a dealer for 68.00 with a retail of 1000.00???? I don't think so . I've seen the label fall off on the first use and they just do not work on salt wet sand.
