Default A Military spot

I work on a military base and received permission 2 years ago, to search on it. I went out once (two years ago), but didn't come up with anything. There were old bottles that my buddy found. The good thing about the permission letter is that, a lot of these places are restricted to go into, and have been since the 1940's.

I got a map from the administration office on base, that showed what the area looked like before it actually became a base. It shows homesteads (peoples name) of who used to live in what house. There are still reminants of the old houses there.

I know George Washington and his army visited this area, so it could be exciting to search.

I'm a novice, so, if I were to look around where a person used to live, what is a good plan of attack for searching an old area.

Some of these homes I'm sure go back into the 1800's and maybe even earlier. Since I got the bug for MDing back again, I wanta try to give that area a try again. Too bad I didn't get back into MDing this past springtime. I may have to wait until next spring to do it,.

When i was out there two years ago, I was metal detecting. I don't really know anything about bottle hunting. Since it was in a desolate area, I brought a shovel, so I wasn't worried about being too careful when I dug.

I was bringing up old bottles, some that I cracked using the shovel (sorry ).

I really don't know anything about bottle hunting, or how you even do it. I know you said that you used an old broom stick, but how do you located a place that has bottle. I mean, its unlike a detector, where you have a tool to actually 'see' the metal items.

I see theres a section on the board for bottles so I'll read up a little. Is there a book on old bottles too?

I wish you the best of luck.

To bad you are not allowed on Sandy Hook with a detector.

There's a long coastline down from Sandy hook. Belmar, Long Branch, Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights and down farther. I live close to the beach, so the faster I understand my machine the better.

I was down in Ocean City, NJ last weekend detecting on the beach. Not much luck. A few coins, a lot of bobby pins (What are bobby pins doing on the beach? )(must of been the romantic area ).

I'm memorizing the difference between GEB/NORM, GEB/DISC, GEB/SAT and TR/DISC. Also, SIG BAL and GEB fine tune.

I'll get there, then attack the beach with some understanding.

Unti then....................

I'll keep that as one of the places to try. I live about 20 min from Seaside and about 15 from Point.

Funny how the MD bug can get a hold of someone. I was suppose to paint a room in my house today, but instead, I've been studying my 5900/DI booklet, testing it in the backyard, and researching online in some areas, I didn't even know about, like bottle hunting and of course the "Halo" effect you described.

My father used to use an old Whites Coinmaster, years ago and I remember him going out to a park called Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. I went with him a couple of times, and he had that machine down to a tee. I watched him pulling up standing libertys, wheat pennies and mercury dime, among others and was surprised that stuff was there.

Years later I bought mine. Now its time to use it.
