the book said to set senitivity to the 3:00 postion then set the discrimination to where it wont pick up nails, tabs etc.(trashy items). So then when out metal detecting and I'm waving my coil over the ground and i get different tones does that mean i'm still picking up trash? I noitced that when pennys are on top of the ground i get a high tone when waving the detecter over that is it going to sound like that when something is inside the ground also? thanks for the help

Bone, Im using a BH Sharpshooter II also. When you swing and the tone is not stable as well as the ID on the screen is moving around its pretty safe to say its trash. Some things to try out is to adjust your swing speed slow down see if the tone gets stable as well as the ID, also do adjust your sensitivity slighty to see if what happens to the signal. If the signal is now stable make sure its repeatable and constant. Now if its stable its up to you if you want to dig it up or not. If its still not then I would pass it. Im practicing in my backyard and soon realized its a trashy area under the grass, fair amount of Iron signals which turned out to be Nails and what not. Depending where your doing your hunting and what your hunting for will help on your settings. If your in a old historical site and your interested in relics you will want to dug up those Iron hits. If in your local park and just interested in coins then discrim out the low tone Iron. There are always exceptions, but like the veterans here would say dig up everything at first, for the practice and understanding of your MD who knows you may turn up a nice find that normally would be passed up. Hope that helps, Im new to MD and the Sharpshooter II also but if you have any other questions or compare notes |

You may be better off setting your disc just aboue alumimum foil and learning what the trash looks and sounds like. Then just ignore it. Dig those different tones or odd readings. Nickels fall just above the foil level. If you are cherry picking coins then sure, then disc out the trash. You will get a loud blast from any detector from items closer to the coil... its that same sound at a lower volume you have to listen for.
