Default Detecting in the c-c-cold

Hi all... Quick question.

Does frozen ground cause the detector to act in an unreliable way, or just make it hard to dig up what is detected... or both?

I live in Eastern PA and the first 2 or 3 inches of earth is frozen (some places not so much), but below that the soil is soft. It is forecasted to be in the low 40s tomorrow and I would really like to head out to a few sites I read about in a 1877 Alminac of my area.

Who says global warming is bad!?!?! joking... I promise... (sorta)

My wife got me an ACE 250 as a surprise... I can't wait to use it.

Wish I could Boobie... but the family bailed out to Georgia to visit family for a few days.

I may go shoot some black powder if the ground is too frozen to dig tomorrow afternoon. Gotta love indoor ranges!

Thanks for the info bro.

I'm in the same boat as you, bro - I just got my Ace 250 and live in NY. Right now I've been bringing a big spade shovel (looks intimidating) to get past those first 2-3 inches, but hey - you do what you gotta do.

In my opinion I genarally wait until it is it the 50's it is alot easier to dig and it not like whatever is in the ground is going to go away and besides that frost that you are so desperatly tring to penatrate is actually drawing thoses coins up to the surface.

Point taken; however, consider fishing, the fish will still be there come Spring, but that doesn't stop people from dragging a shed out onto the lake and cutting a hole into the middle of the ice during the Winter. Sometimes you just want to get out there... even if it is cold.

I am also on the Eastern side of PA and I know you are excited about getting out there but we are done until the ground thaws. The one major thing you must remember is depending on where you are digging there is no way you will be able to remove and replace a nice plug. You don't want it to look like a war zone when you are done or you will never be allowed back again. I tried a couple of spots two weeks ago at a school I have been working and I decided to wait until spring. I have alot of ground to cover and I don't want to be chased off. Be patient spring will be here before you know it!

Good advice guys, appreachiate the input. I'll keep scouting until Spring. I'm not used to all this cold (grew up in Tampa). Some white stuff fell from the sky the other day... not quite sure what to think of that just yet.

That cold weather doesn't keep me home, but I do have to say if I am not prepared like with gloves like on the last trip!!! lol!!!! Didn't take me long to say it's time to get back inside for some heat!!!! lol!!!!! I guess that's just how much I love this hobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Default Batteries

I have also heard that keeping batteries cold keeps them fresh Think I read that on a site by a battery manufacturer . Seems as though heat is what is bad for them .
