I would say the most important tip is to know your detector.. and to get good at pinpointing. Once you get the pinpoint dialed in, you'll be more successful in digging a good plug keeping the coin safely in the middle. If the detector gives you depth reading.. that'll help too. I like to dig below my target.. so I don't scrape it when I try to extract it.

Hope this helps..

As well as learning your machine there are a couple of other factors which play into successful coin shooting.

Probably the most important after experiance is location !! You need to be hunting places where coins have been lost to find them,, look for places where people often move about in numbers, IE fairgrounds, parks, playgrounds, campgounds, carnival sites or any other place that may be particular to your local area.

Research is the Metal detectorists best tool, there are many ways to research the history of your area,, old news papers, pictures or just by talking to some of the long time residents,, the internet is also full of resources for research !!

Good luck with the coins !!

By the way a keep a record of what you find and where ,, over time the pattern of finds can help point the way to other places to search !!
