Default Wading through trash, and digging.

I've been researching the ghost towns in my area from Free2detect's thread. One of them is the town of Molino, MO. It turns out that my brother best freind's garage sits right atop of where the old Molino store used to stand. It might be my first real hunt when things thaw out around here. Problem is, he is always working, and tinkering in his garage, and said there are nuts, bolts, car parts etc. literally ALL OVER the place. Any tips on avoiding junk and finding good stuff like coins?? Also, my one time out on my dad's property, my digging wasn't up to par. It was tough going, and the holes didn't look very good after I tried to patch them up. What should I dig with? An actual shovel, or what. Last time I used a small garden spade, but it didn't work out too well.
THanks.

Hey Adam,What detector are you using ? You could section off an area clear off all the visable junk, then dig everything. Eventualy you will get to the good stuff ! Another way would be to learn to recognize a good coin signal on whatever detector that you have and dig only thouse, but you could miss something's this way.In an area were keeping the grass as it was is important i use a knife or small trowel,if the end result need not be pretty a small entrenching shovel is what i use,but it depends on the soil two.Hard rocky ground i like to use a knife plowed fields and the like i use the shovel.I dig mostly useing my hands if possible !

Thanks for your responses.
I am using a bounty hunter lonestar that I got for Christmas. I've been practicing with coins in my back yard, trying to get used to the different tones.

Depends on the detector.I'm not familiar with the bounty hunter but my fisher has a distinct sound for a coin.I had a garrett 2500 that i could program to find only what i wanted. For example only quarters or only dimes or both etc.You could also program it to find say a matching earring by passing the matching earring under the coil.It pays to buy a better detector !

Default Trash Detecting

Hi! Now this is going to sound unorthodox but hunt in high discriminate first. Get a pull-tab and discriminate it out! Now Dig all signals! Once this is done, lower your discrimination to accept the nickel and hunt again and dig all signals. You will be amazed at all the coins that were masked and could not be detected on the 1st round. Also collect all trash and dispose in the trash can, you do not want to detect it again! HH Joe
