Perhaps these will help. I just Googled it in and found them.
Pinpointing - A simple way to detune any detector with a pinpointing feature is when the coil is over the approximate center of the target quickly release and squeeze the trigger. This will shrink the target size making the target easier to locate. You can repeat this detuning as many times as necessary. If you completely lose the signal move your coil off to the side of the target, release & squeeze the trigger, and then repeat the above procedure.

Detuning: Adjusting the audio threshold into the null or less sensitivity tuning zone. Also a method of narrowing a target signal width manually for precise pinpointing. This is accomplished by retuning to audio threshold over the target response area.

A more precise way of pinpointing is to "detune" the instrument. This is accomplished by first activating, releasing, then again activating and holding the non-motion pinpoint mode switch as the coil nears the target from two directions-side-to-side and forward-reverse. This technique can be perfected to a degree where the area that needs investigating can be reduced to a size that often is only slightly larger than the detected object.

Default Depending On The Detector Model....

.....you hit it right on boobie! I usually detune at least once every time I pinpoint. With some machines, it's a good idea to lift the detector off the ground a ways, and re-cycle the trigger, after you have pinpointed and recovered the target, before you begin to hunt again.

Thanks, Boobie. I was wondering how to use these "tune" switches on the Bandido uMax I just got.

"detuning" does this go for any detector? i have an ace 250. i noticed that when i try to pinpoint lots of times the thing beeps if i place the coil about 1 inch from the ground. even if i move the coil to another spot it still beeps. it's hard to describe. i'm pretty sure it can't be detecting metal. it's almost like the signal is bouncing off the ground itself.

Default Hey Tomcat....

.....most likely what you are hearing is the feedback from the auto ground balance circuit reacting to changing from mineralization to no mineralization when you lift it up, or from no moneralization to mineralization when you are lowering it.

Detuning, on the other hand, has to do with shortening the signal over a target, once you have located one. Detuning "makes the coil less sensitive to the target and sounds off over a smaller area of the coil (more centered), so as to make it easier to "pin point" it.

Default What machine....

.....are you using rabbit ears? Detuning is accomplished differently on different machines. What you are doing basically is "reseting the threshold tone or (otherwise known as retuning) while over the target in pin point or all metal mode". So......how does your machine reset the threshold? By trigger switch, or push button?
