Default Back Yard and Lots of Signals

Guys, I just got outside to try out my brand new DFX. The backyard is still mostly covered with snow but there were some bare spots especially around the apple trees and next to the back porch steps. My question is this, I was getting hits all over the place. I was getting alot of dime and quarter signals as well as small ring, pennies and nickels, I even got a few $1 signals. I received signals for nails and foil also. Is it possible to have so much stuff buried under the ground? I mean I was getting alot of signals. I didn't dig any though because I was afraid to tear up the yard. I was getting alot of signals that were up to 13.5" deep. How did you guys master the pinpointing without excavating huge holes? I don't know my detector well enough yet, I guess its hard for me to believe there is so much stuff buried in my back yard. My home was built in 1918.

I sure would like to get out an detect with a more knowledgeable detectorist. Hey Boobie when does your Metal Detecting club meet? I'm in Somerset PA perhaps I could come and learn something at your club.

Take Care,

300 Wtby

Thanks for the reply Boobie. Yes, 300wtby stands for 300 Weatherby Mag. That is my other passion, Hunting. So the Metal Detecting is just another way to hunt in the off season. We go west every year, do it yourself backpack adventures for Mule Deer. Don't get to take the 300 wtby to often anymore though, hard to draw the tag so we have been doing Muzzleloader Hunts for Deer and Elk. Sure to love it when we draw that Region G tag in Wyoming though, season begins on Sept. 15th and it is a great time to be in the mountains. When we don't draw the Wyoming tag we either do a High Country Buck hunt in CO or a Muzzleloader Deer Hunt in CO. Both hunts are generally in the beginning to middle of September and there would be no other place I would rather be than in the Mountains in September.

I have an Eclipse 950 Coil. I will just have to start digging and as you say Practice, Practice, Practice. Hopefully in another month or so it will be nice enough to hunt all the time. I will take you up on meeting you at a site near the Pgh Zoo. I would appreciate it if you would let me know when you will be there. It will be great just watching other experienced detectorists hunt. My email address is davidhalverson@verizon.net just let me know.

As far as attending this months meeting, it won't work out for this months meeting but maybe next month.

Take Care,

300 Wtby

300wtby ....

sounds like we are pretty much on the same page (in more than one area) ... I'm still very early in the learning process with my DFX and my modified Remington Model 700 chambered in 300 Weatherby Magnum is one of my favorite rifles ... I've found the DFX to be easy to use and thoroughly enjoy using it ... I'm not yet to the point that I can detect differences in tone so the information on the screen is very useful ... I've found that the pinpointing features of the DFX are very accurate in both location and how deep the object is ... I also have a Whites BeachHunter which I'm having a much harder time learning how to accurately use its pinpointing feature ... in responses to my early post asking questions, the advise to practice, practice, practice was also given and I've found it to be very true ... hope you get out to use yours very soon

Jim

Hi 300 wtby,
As far as finding a lot of signals in your back yard goes, join the club. Apparently they put as many nails on the ground as in my house. Unlike you I have been diggin my back yard ( if I don't stop my wife may bury me in one of those holes) and mostly it's just nails. I have found one penny and some kids toys. Anyhow I've pretty muched stopped in the yard (for now) and have headed to the park. Still learning a ton and cleaning up the park at the same time. Good luck.
