Default Keep your Coil and Coil cover watertight.

For many years i have sealed the coil cover to the Coil with Bathroom water resistant mastic. If you use this it will stop the Grit and water from seaping between the coil and coil cover and causing you to get falsing signals as sometimes there can get trapped minute mineralised bits inbetween the two , and it also saves taking your coil cover off to clean between it and the coil all the time. Once sealed it need not come off again ,unless you need to replace a coil cover ,and then all you do is reseal it. Any unsightly Mastic can be wiped away with white Spirit after the job is done

Default sealing

Sorry Greg i didn`t give the Full Expression. Its Silicon mastic Sealant . you know ,the Goo the bathroom fitters seal the Edges of the Baths with when ,butted up to a wall to stop water running or any surface ie, in a Kitchen. I have to think carefully when i`m Typing as i forget you peeps in the USA call things differently over there. You can usually buy it in Hardware stores or places like DIY shops.
going back to the coil sealing. all you need to seal is the EDGES of the coil cover where they meet the coil . Put it on the Coil cover first then lower the Coil on to the Coil cover i`ve found makes it easyer.

Default sealing

Hi greg, well over here we get it in White,Black, Clear or brown. They use the General purpose Silicon mastic sealant over here for sealing around Double glazed windows, or roof guttering, so obviously it has to be Waterproof so its ideal for the job. I use the Clear stuff myself .Its actualy White when it comes out the Tube but it sets clear. Jeb

Hi Jeb,
I have a tube of silicon that dries clear and I'm going to seal mine up tonight. Your right, that sand and grit gets in between the coil and cover which can't be good.
Thanks for the tip Jeb.
I was out the other day with my minelab Explorer !! and was very impressed with its depth!!!

Default depth

Oh, yes the EXplorer is Very deep.I tell you what though Greg, i find alot of people from over your side of the Pond use alot of Discrimination. Over here it doesn`t pay to use alot ,as if you do you lose depth. So when your Knocking out Ring pull tabs and foil and Aluminium bottle tops ,your also knocking out Some silver rings which will fall in the same band as Foil or Ring pulls. All i put in on my Discrimination is to tick the Box with NAILS . and thats it. That should Give you a small Triangle of Blacked out Screen in the top left hand side of your screen. set Iron Mask to -12, this will give you a certain amount of Discrim enough to stop you bending every five mins . BUT you should hear the iron nulling out as you go along, i pick up the odd bit here and there but its a small price to pay for the depth you will get. I`ve had a Coin the size of your old silver Dollar at a good 12 in . It may have been more but it was well down there.
Been out today with a mini 5 in coil on . Weather was pretty gusty and cold , so i only stayed about 2 hrs. didn`t find much exept for a Medieval Horse decoration For leather straps . about 2 in long made of bronze and Diamond Lozenge cut outs on it. The field i`m on has produced Lots of Roman stuff Mainly Fibula`s and Coinage with a lot of Medieval coins and a medieval Gold ring. Not found by me i may add. I`ve had a few Hammered coins , but not for a few months now , as one side is under seed and the other side is pasture. So i`m doing the pasture at the Moment. Hope to get some piccys up when i can find out how to put them up on here. I`ll have to use my Mrs`s camera. Jeb
