Default Keep an eye to the past...

Look at places, thinking about how they looked all so many years ago. Try to see where the people would have sat in the grass for the picnic, or rolled down the hills... things weren't always as they are today.

Be methodical. Slow and overlapping swings. You won't cover a lot of ground but you won't pass by a target.

Hunt with a friend when possible...it's fun to have the competition and also comforting to know that someone else is around for help in an emergency when you're way out in the boonies!

Don't start off thinking you have to buy a high priced detector or just cuz it's advertised as the Best or Deepest or whatever. I did this and it was just to much to comprehend as I had no knowledge of detecting at all. Find a Great Forum like this one and ask the experienced hands & Sponsors, Start with whats comfortable & easy to understand for you!
Once you Master the Hand Tools then You'll Excell at the Power Tools!

Default Don't Forget Digging Tools

You need a good digger, to cut nice clean plugs. And always fill in your holes and take the trash with you!

Get permission to hunt a property that's not yours. Know where you can hunt and where you can't. Take care of your hunting area like it is your own. It only takes an act of carelessness to cause more restrictive laws to be passed or even banning the hobby altogether.

Alot of good advice SO far.. Hmm Makes it difficult to add to.

So.. Here's my shot..

Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Download Google Earth "Free" and look for any Abnormalities on your hunting site.."Parks & Fields" mostly..

Last but not Least...

Do not bite your fingernails !!!!!
