Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and to the hobby of metal detecting. I live in Toledo Ohio and so far I have not ventured any farther than my own yard which has given me at least 10 wheaties, a small toy gun that I have traced back to the 40's and some other coins from the 60's. I want to get out to some areas and see what my White's Prizm 4 can really do but I am unsure of what the laws say about detecting in Toledo. Does any one know? Is it alright to hunt in city parks or on school grounds? I would appreciate it if anybody could let me know since I am really enjoying the hobby and would like to get more involved in it as time goes on. Thank you |

Hi and welcome to TQ!! I will tell you what I have done to find out about local parks in my area. I located a phone number for the city parks and recreation office and called them. I then asked if they allow metal detecting in their parks. Normally they will place me on hold to confirm with their manager, but I haven't gotten any "NO" answers, yet. Of course, when I call national parks or camp sites, that's a different story. National Parks are off limits. The phone is your friend. Get out there and seek the permission to hunt where you like.

I also live in Toledo, and do most of my detecting there. City Parks and Public Schools are ok, as is the sidewalk strip - but there can be irate homeowners that do not realize its legal status. Also seek out sidewalk and road tearups and ask the crew for permission (usually allowed with safety equipment). A friend and I have been doing it for over a year, both with used XLT's. He started with a Prism 4, but didn't like it and ended up trading it in soon after. We love the XLT - and it's nice having a the White's Midwest dealer right there in Sylvania.
Any of the homes in the older 'safe' neighborhoods (like around Detroit/South and Sylvania/Jackman/Lewis have a lot of goodies in the sidewalk strip, including a lot of pre 64 silver. Schools have been hunted a lot, but still yield - its impossible to get everything, the area is just too large. Best of luck! |

Welcome to Treasure Quest!
As far as I've heard, the schools are ok, just hunt when there is no school. They wont mind you cleaning up the yards! Happy Hunting!
