I am new to metal detecting and live in Ann Arbor, Mi, home of the University of Michigan. Anyone have suggestions on places in cities where treasure can be found? I tried on campus last week and surprisingly found nothing. There are no beaches really around.
Thanks!!! Erin |

Erin - Welcome to Treasure Quest. The oldest part of towns & cities are great places to hunt for treasure. If you see any road construction projects or sidewalk tearups talking place, the ground where the roads/sidewalks were could give forth excellent old finds. If you go to your local library and do some research on the history of your area you will be able to find out where the locations were held for when the circus came to town, or even where the tent revival sites were held. Many people will go door to door asking for permission to metal detect old house lots. This is always a benefit for those seeking old coinage. Always obtain permission when metal detecting on private land. Do your research and you will be rewarded by the great finds you take home. A lot of members in the upper United States (where hard freezes occur) will use the winter months to do their research and when the ground is not so hard to dig will use that research to benefit their metal detecting hobby. Other good places that people do well in finds are old swimming holes and fishing holes. Go talk to the older generation - the folks who can tell you what used to take place at whatever locations. Visit your nursing homes and see how it can benefit you in your search for treasure. The older folks love the company as well! If you go to the area of Treasure Quest where the articles are written, read "Wheats Don't Count" and the other articles written by Free2Dtect. He has some very valuable advice that anyone can benefit from.
As for modern day finds, you can always go to your local parks and schools. There are always treasure to take home on a daily basis. Not only will you come home with finds, you will also learn your machine and what it is telling you by what you dig up. Good luck to you Erin, and please post your finds here in the forums with pictures!

Hi Erin, very nice to meet you. Try finding the oldest section of town and go to where there is large old houses that were upscale for the time. Work the sidewalk edges and grassy strips that are next to the street. Especially if there are any abandoned houses. I have had decent results with this kind of detecting Erin. Of course ask permission just in case. I hope this is helpful for you. God Bless Erin.

One local little league ball field produces pocket spills regularly for me. Behind home plate is a small hill with oak trees, during the heat of the summer this is prime real estate for the parents to sit !!! dan ........... |
