Default Making a probe that is coin safe

I've seen various things written about coins that were damaged while being retrieved.
Here's a simple, old tip that works well. I had my screwdriver wrapped this way when I detected years ago:

Buy a long flat bladed screw driver to use as a probe/ground slitter.
Wrap the blade tightly with electrical tape.
Put an extra layer on the tip if necessary.
It will probably need changed a few times each season, but only costs a few cents. If you wrap properly, it will not diminish your ability to push into the ground.
You can attain a similar effect with the rubbery "dip" that is sold at hardware centers. It is marketed for dipping tool handles to form a gripping surface. This route is more expensive and I'm not sure how long the dipped blade will hold up.
Yes, it is a pain to remove the tape, but it may prevent you from gouging a nice item!

mybe you could take an old pot or kettle and melt some rubber and dip the screwdriver in it then let it cool.

Greg: I already bought a Garrett GTP-1350. Liked the features vs. price. Seems to have good bang-for-the-buck. Will really know this Spring. Have to call up John and hit a few spots I'm researching.

Rob: I'm afraid that if i try to melt rubber in a kettle it will asphyxiate (boy I hope I spelled that right) me!

Thumbs up

Here's an idea dip the point of the probe in candle or bee wax, it's temporary but will prevent scratching.

Hi everyone

I just thought that I would share a tip on this subject with you all, I use a fiberglass fishing arrow, cut to about 12 inches long ,I know that most of you have seen the wooden handles that are made for files? I drill one to the size to fit the arrow shaft, epoxy it in,file the other end to a spade tip, and dip in 30 min. epoxy. durable flexable and Coin safe !!! cheap to replace as needed, I can actually cut the end by an inch at a time and redip in epoxy and reuse for several times.

Question probe

I just got one of those heavy duty plastic darning needles sharpened the other end put it in a vise with about a inch or two sticking up and drove a golf ball in it.the plastic doesn't scratch the coin.

I use a plactic mine probe that I got while in Kosovo...its by far the best probe I found yet. It is about 15 inches long too, so I can probe them deep targets if I feel like it.
