Default Coins on edge

I saw this thread on another board and I thought I'd re-post my reply here:

My best coin - a 1922 Peace Dollar - was exactly perpendicular to the ground, about 6" down.

Coins on edge are very frustrating to successfully retrieve, and I have put my own personal mint mark on plenty... when the coin is on an angle (anywhere between 20 and 70º, like this /) it can be very hard to pinpoint in motion mode. You'll have much better luck in non-motion pinpointing mode. When a coin (or ring, for that matter) is perpendicular (i.e. on the surface, sitting in the grass) my experience is that it will give the impression of two objects (on the horizontal swinging plane), the width of the coil apart (a double-beep).

Since I don't use a hand-held pinpointer, I turn my coil perpendicular to the ground (like this |) and swing it back and forth <---> - this will usually give me a better idea of where it actually is.

I hope this helps!

I dont think I could detect without my pinpointer. I have been digging less than what my machine tells me the depth and then savoring the rest. Thanks for the post.

I've tried that before, a little awkward but works. I got the idea from a Minelab video I saw.

I won't hunt without my pinpointer - but cjoej recommended (when I first joined TQ) that by adjusting your coil position (like was suggested in the post) a person can better search for items that are close to the base of trees, fence posts, etc. Remember, a lot of folks used to bury caches at the base of fence posts!
