Interesting result?
Hi Everyone, I just want to drop this note to you all. I did a test and learned something. You can do this too. Get a small block of wood and cut a groove in it just deep and wide enough to put a dime in it so it is vertical or standing on edge. First I picked up a detector with a concentric round coil on it. I swept the coil across the dime about 3 or 4 inches above it going from the head to tail side and back. This of corse will give you a double beep almost everytime. Now sweep your coil from edge to edge of the dime and see what happens. It virtually disappears from this angle! Turn back 90 deg. and it reappears!
Not all is lost and this is why you should go around a target when one is detected. I know that not all coins will be standing vertically but when it happens you will know what is occurring. Now get a detector with a DD coil and do this test again. You will find that with this DD type coil there is no disappearing act with the dime. You will have detection all the way around the dime. I just wanted to mention this to be of help and I learned too. I love the theory and electronics of metal detectors almost as much as using them. They are fascinating instruments and are never boring, and there are so many variables. I hope everyone didn't fall asleep in physics class! Happy Hunting one and all!
