Smile Coil Protection

A while back, I don't remember if I read about it, or talked to someone about it, the subject was about protecting the coil.

It was suggested that the coil, or the cover could be coated with a vinyl spray/brush on truck bed liner coating that would be nearly indestuctable and last virtually forever. Since the coating is vinyl, it wouldn't disturb the electronics of the coil, and might peel off if used on plastic.

I don't remember anything more, or even if it's a good idea or not. Just a discussion I partially remember.

Does anybody have any thoughts pro or con on the idea. Since the new season will be coming up in a month or so, I'm just getting my stuff ready, and thought about it.

Thanks
Leo

A week or so ago, I think it was BDA Hunter who posted this information for protecting and sealing a coil. I don't remember reading anything about a vinyl adhesive though.

<instructions>
Waterproof Marine Epoxy Coating.
1) Strip off the worn out cover and cleaned up the coil
2) Sand the bottom of the coil lightly to provide good adhesion
3) Tape around the edge of the coil to make a clean job of it
4) Mix up a batch of marine epoxy
5) Apply marine epoxy to the bottom of the coil
6) Peel off the tape while the epoxy is still wet
7) Allow epoxy to harden over night and then give it a light sanding
The coil is as good as new and will give me at least a season of hunting before it needs recoating. Then I just have to scuff up the epoxy and give it a thin coat wherever it has worn down.
<end instructions>

Don't know if this was what you were talking about but hope it helps.

Hey Sonja

It does help. That's what prompted me to remember a partial conversation. (I hate it when that happens). It's been nagging at me since I read it.

Similar idea, but different coating. The more things we can throw into our bag of tricks, and tips the better.

Thanks
Leo

Hey Leo, I also remember that post. Seems like someone said that the Sniper coil for the Ace250 has that Rhino coating on it already, so it's a great coating to use.

If my memory serves me right, I think Pappy said that. I could totally be wrong, but my memory has been sorta good lately

I'll see if I can find that thread.

AH! Pris, you're an angel.

I wasn't fantasizing, and it is real. I'm pretty sure that's what I remember, and a search didn't help. Rhino Coating. Thanks.

Does anybody have any idea if this works for modifying existing coils or scuff covers the same way?

Darn memory is the second thing to go, but I don't remember what the first is.

Thanks
Leo

Hi, I Really Don't See Any Advantage To Doing This. Not When You Consider By The Time You Buy All Of Stuff You Need Plus Your Time Spent. You Could Buy A Coil Cover Cheaper. Maybe I'm Wrong And Not Seeing Some Obvious Advantage. Keep In Mind That This Is Only My Opinion....Thanks

Hey jimmy, I'm on the same thought as You unless and I'm not sure If there are Coils That don't have Coil covers made for them.Come to think of it There are and My Wilson Coin Select is One Example. So on that side of it and if you hunt where your coil is prone to the TOP of it getting Hit or Marred up Then it sounds Like a Good Idea.Have to try it On my Wilson Coils.
Thanks Leo for Bringing that Up !

Hi, I Hear Ya Tinman Also You Sure Would Not Want To Use Any Rubber Based Products Like (Rhino Coating). Unless I'm Wrong On The Rhino Coating The Friction And Drag Would Kill You. I Believe They Make Coil Covers For Most But Probably Not All Metal Detectors.. That May Be The Only Exception To The Rule. But Hey I Might Be Wrong ....Thanks
