I have used the XLT for nearly 7 years and the only difference your smaller coil would make is better separation from target to target. You can also get a little closer to the tree or fence post. You may give up a little depth using a smaller coil.

I started using the smaller coil (8") with my EX II and love it.. oh..Pinpointing is much better too.

So any program that you use will work just fine with the smaller or larger coils. Might want to tweak the target response a little though.
