I never did until I got one that came with a detector. It is a must have in my opinion. Even though I am good at pinpointing, and my machines have good and accurate depth meters, sometimes you get those elusive targets that move around and whatnot. A pinpointer can really help in those instances. On average I would guess that using the pinpointer saves me 10 to 30 minutes per hunt. That's 10 to 30 more minutes I can hunt.

Some people use them and some dont. Personally I love my 570 and it saves alot of time. More time=more treasure... But they have many kinds at different prices.

I saw another thread tonite that mentioned a very inexpensive pinpointer.. good luck!

i would strongly reccommend using a pinpointer. it saves time and you don't destroy the lawn as much as you would without one. i use a vibraprobe 570 and i love it. they are a bit expensive but are well worth it, trust me.

I ordered a vibraprobe on Sunday and am hoping I can give you an educated opinion soon. I think it'll be a real time saver.

I have an MPx metal detector that has a pinpoint feature built in. Since I am very new at this game I don't know what features other brands have on them but I would guess they would have a built in pinpoint also(?). The pinpoint on my detector works very well. It centers the target in a 6 inch circle and I can cut around the edge and pop the plug out and generally the target is right there. If this is how a separate pin pointer works then I would highly recommend it. As mentioned in other posts it does save a ton of time. Time versus expense? Your call I guess.

Default PinPointing

That was probably the most difficult part of detecting, especially with a WOT coil. A couple years ago, I purchased a Periscope, which I think are no longer made. It not only found where to dig with in inches but identified targets with a 95% accuracy. I would not consider hunting without it. Actually it has spoiled me.
