Not sure what machine and coil you are using, but generally a loop will have 2 coils - one for transmit and the other is a receiver. When a metal disturbs the field under the loop, the received signal will change and this translates to a beep or other sound. This is a very simplified description. For more accurate info, Google "how metal detectors work" - there are at least a couple of articles out there that you should read.
