Default Detecting trashy areas

In the last couple weeks i have incountered one of the most trashy areas i have ever detected. There are several ways that i have herd are very usefull

1 Taking a metal rake and soldering magnets to the tynes so you pick up all metal from the area you want to detect the only problem with this method is in some cases there might be something of value on the ground which you will be raking.

2 Another way is taking the area in patches of 20 feet at a time and slowly clearing the area of all the junk and or possible relics.

3 Turning your discriminator up to full.

I am very curious to find out what other people in this forum do in the case of trashy areas and their techniques.

Not knowing the type detector your using i'll just say that some detectors do a better job than others depending on the type of trash you encounter, whether it is iron or aluminum or other metals. One of the first things in heavy trash is to increase discrimination or notch out most common item, use a small coil , more than likely you'll probably have to lower sensitivity to help reduce target masking. Swing slower and if you have a tone ID detector rely on tones more than Visual ID. With a concentric coil it may help to raise the coil a bit to narrow the detecting field on surface stuff. It also helps to have a detector with a quick target recovery reset speed. Just a few things you can do while hunting at trashy sites and each case is different so you have to improvise sometimes based on circumstances. Hope this helps some . HH Bill

After reading Free2Dtect's post i realize there are many variables and the discrimination setting is based on the detector and the shear volume of trash and what type trash it is and what type detector you have and how it helps ID the targets. If you use a detector like a fisher 1236 x2 with no visual target ID and no tonal ID good luck running the lowest discrimination below bottlecap in some of the pulltab ,foil infested parks that i hunt unless your into gridding and want to spend days on a 10 x20'area which may result in excellent results if you have patience. It's all in your tolerance level and at my age i have little .I just don't want to give bad advice and Free2Dtect pointed out very good reasons to use low disc. HH Bill

Default Trashy Area?

I grid a small area of 10x10 just past pull-tab on disc. I grid every possible direction NSEW,then i go NW,NE,SE,SW,ETC.., then I go in circles in the same area. Then I put the disc. down a little past nails and get the very deep coins.

Default trashy areas

howdy all

i work a lot of trashy areas, by grid 10 by 10 with no decremination. i use a fisher 1280 with a 10an half inch coil dig it all. in the water i set the decremination on 1, when i get a good hit i take the decremination up to 3 if it is still there and sounds good i dig. it is a lot of work, your goodies is under the trash, you can be sure of that. good hunting to all

Default How I Approach Trashy Areas

Well, I'm sitting here at home, bummed out that it's freezing outside and windy, and I saw this post and I thought I'd share my methods...

When I find a trashy area that I think is worth my time, what I usually do is start at a high disc. and dig the solid signals, and then back off the disc once I've stopped getting good signals. Think of it as hunting in "layers".

Rince and repeat as necessary.

Robert

Robert ,you hit the nail on the head for hunting trashy sites. Hunting in layers is the only way to really hunt a promising trashy site. I'm happy to see your posting again. HH Bill
