I don't know about anyone else but i used to dig so many big deep holes looking for larger than life targets that sounded good and ID good. Since most of us are looking for coin size targets or smaller here is a simple way to ID a large target with any detector regardless of depth indicator. When you get a good hit take notice of how long the response is then raise the coil and gradually raise the coil while sweeping and if your at knee level and still getting a good reading it ain't no coin and everyone should be familiar where a surface quarter or dime disappears when sweeping and raising the coil. Secondly, hit pinpoint button or toggle and notice how long it takes to sweep over the target and remember that coin sized targets pass quickly . Another thing that used to drive me nuts was large iron of to the side as much as a foot and reads good target, if you get a good solid pinpoint a foot across or in many locations it ain't no coin. i see it all the time at places i hunt where holes are a foot wide and just imagine the frustration . Learning how to pinpoint and ID size is very important towards your frustration factor in this hobby and to others that follow you and keep your presence negligible. HH Bill

I still occasionally "side shoot" a nail or screw, having gotten a good reading as the coil passed with the iron target just at the edge. Not often, but a few times this year. I have found that with my machine....if I swing it to the right and get a good VDI reading...and to the left I get iron (or vice versa)....it's junk.
If I dug every signal, I'd not bring half as many coins home. There's just too much stuff in the ground in these parts. I look for solid, repeatable hits....and those I dig. Sometimes it's a screwcap....most of the time it's not. I dug just one crown bottle cap tonight that my 6000 insisted was a quarter. Wyatt |

I do the left and right swing as you described and did not usually dig. BUT The last time I did that I decided to dig. At the bottom of the hole was a fantastic solid gold wedding bans . Noe I dig them all that give me a solid reading more than one time. I ain't gonna take a chance of passing up another great find just to move on. Of course this is just my humble opinion, and I am never in to much of a hurry to see just what might be down there. But whatever you decide to do remember the only way you will know what it is will take a dig.
HAve a nice day. |
