Default Rock Tumbler

Hello Everyone,
I thought I'd let ya'll know that Harbor Frieght has a 3# Rock Tumbler on there website. I was at the store today and it was on sale for $21.99. I picked one up and will post the before and after pics of my first attempt. Very scientific method. I put all my copper pennies in and borrowed some of the grandson's play sand, about 3/4 full. Added enough water to saturate plus 3/4 inch and a good squirt of dish soap. I'll let it go for 24 hrs.

I use a gun casing tumbler and aquarium rock with arm and hammer washing soda as boobien has said , i had a lot of trouble with the banks , now my clad quarters and dimes look like new , i run it for about 12 hours , more if i need to, it works great . good hunting , it;s the only method i found that works , good hunting . pappy turned me on the the method, i think it's best to do the penny's separate from the dimes and quarters , if i'm right ,it seems to turn the coins a little red- copper color , the clad coins leach the copper out of the penny's. for what it's worth that's my idea's on the subject.

I was looking at this exact model the other day at Harbor Freight Tools. I was going to use my daughters rock tumbler, however I think that if I do, she will never see (or use) it again!!! Therefore I was considering this model.
Now that I know of someone who own one, can you tell me how loud this tumbler is? My daughters is very loud, therefore we keep it in her playhouse outside. Thanks!

Default First Attempt

Well, here is the result from my first attempt. The pennies are pretty much all clean but they have a real frosted look to them. Maybe I should have took them out sooner. They tumbled for 15 hrs. (I was going to try 24 hr but got a bit anxious. Good thing too, they may have disappeared!)
The lid was very difficult at first but used the big washer under the tightening knob to pry it off.
The unit is very quiet. The barrel is rubber so it muffle the sound.
Boobie/ Dave, aside from the obvious answer , where can I get get crushed walnut shells? And are you guys talking about baking soda?

Use arm and hammer washing soda , ther is a difference ,and i tried the walnut and the corn composition, but aquarium rock works much better . do the quarters and dimes separarte from the pennys . ,,no leaching fro mthe copper then .

ILS - Very impressive cleaning there... I am about to head out the door to get that very model tumbler. I'm glad to have pre-knowledge of the machine. Thanks for posting the before and after pics!

Say Boobie, What aproximate mixture do you advise? Half full of coins and half gravel, 1/4 coin 3/4 gravel, etc... And is it a dry mix or do you add water?

Thanks,
ILS
