Default Enlighten me on the probe

With my new DFX holiday package, one of the things I ordered was a probe. Now, I'm not sure how this works. Even if you pinpoint with the DFX to where you exactly think it is, how reliable would the probe be. You stick this in the ground, but how do you know if you are hitting your target? What would it feel like?

Where is the best place to use this and why would you prefer to use it, vice a trowel. Obviously it'll make a smaller hole than a trowel, but even if you find something with the probe, how would you get it out of the ground without using a trowel.

I know I'm throwing a hundred questions at one time, but I'm curious and though these may sound like inane questions, I gotta start somewhere.

Can you give me a scenario, when you find a coin, how would you attack the coin from start to finish using a probe.

They all work in nearly the same way, but some do have optional way to use them
Its in the Holiday package catalogue Whites is offering. It has 8" steel shaft with brazed ball bearing tip. Its not the electronic probe, but a regular screwdriver type.

Ok Greg, thanks. I see the procedures they go thru. I'm sure its experience that one has to go thru. I still have a question on what it would feel like once you hit a coin. How would you know that you're not pushing the coin deeper in the ground.

Don, I have not personally tried this technique, however if you were to bury some coins in your yard and try the screwdriver/probe technique a few times, I would think you would get a little familiar with what you are trying to "feel" by searching for your target...

I may have to do this as well... never know if I will ever need to use the technique in the field!!! Good luck!

pushing the coin deeper into the ground with your probe, you'd have to almost stand on the probe to do that. Probes with the bronze tips prevent one from scratching the surface of the coin.....I've never had one, still use my long ice pick.
