I bought a Fiskar's (sp?) digging knife at Wal-Mart for about $10 and I love it. It has a serrated blade on one side for digging through roots, a notch at the tip for doing whatever that's for, and it's very durable and won't bend at all. Using that has made my digging so much easier than the cheap Dollar Store trowel I was using until it broke. Now I just slice right through the ground.

Bill and I use a narroow shovel (not sure of the proper name though) it works really well. Atleast when I get to use it. I went out and bought the kids some beach toys and it had a little green plastic screen in it which has now became my best friend to MDing. I load that little thing with the sand and wave it over the coil to see if I got my coin (that is when I have a coin) and it works great!!!

I use a cheap Bowie knife to break hard ground then a Digging tool. Only for private property. Don't walk in a park or school with one of these. LOL

I just bought this yesterday at Lowes. I know it is not the Lesche but it is SS and very sturdy. Has a limited lifetime warranty and was $13.00. If it breaks on me i will spring for the Lesche, Beale.

I had the same idea. I wanted a short lightweight small bladed shovel. Something that was better quality than a kid's sandbox shovel. I bought a "sharpshooter" shovel (we call them "billdukies" around here). Then cut the blade down to about 8-10". The overall lenth is just about right for using it as sort of a walking stick when holding it by the top handle. I only use it in areas where I'm not worried about destorying some prime real estate. (all holes filled ofcourse). So far it's working out pretty good.

That planter's buddy looks interesting, give us feedback those using it. I really like the Fiskars Garden Knife from a value/use point.
