| Minelab Explorer SE The Minelab Explorer SE is considered by many around the world to be the most technologically advanced metal detector ever manufactured. Incorporating FBS, Full Bandwidth Spectrum, means that the SE transmits not one or two, but 28 different frequencies, from 1.5kHz to 100kHz, into the ground at the same time, making sure not to miss conductive targets regardless of their size. An extremely fast microprocessor combined with 3rd generation software providing excellent discrimination, and a feature ensemble too long to list here, are all packed into this fabulous metal detector. |

Howdy Johna, as you may have found the Minelab Explorer SE is quite a different experience indeed. There are many different ways to configure this machine but patience is going to be your best friend for awhile. I would use it in the quick start mode which maybe what you have already done. Get lots of different samples of targets, coins, rings, pulltabs, trash and write down what the FER/ CON numbers are. Like a quarter will read 00 29 in the digital screen. When you scan these samples also correlate the tone to the numbers you get and practice this a lot to train the brain to remember what you see and hear. As you begin to become more advanced in the use of the SE then experiment more with the various settings.
The Explorer SE is an awsome and powerful instrument and when it is learned it will produce good finds for you Johna. So stay with it and if I can help just PM me and I will do my best for you. Ok I wish you much success and may God Bless ya Johna. John Tomlinson,CET P=VI John's Detectors Blackwell,Tx. Best Little Detector Shop in Texas! ![]() ![]() |

I will watch this thread close, and I hope it grows. I am also a new owner of a Minelab Explorer SE. I do have trouble with it as well, but there are some days I go out and do well with it - mostly with the smaller 8" coil.
John's Detectors - I am sure the answer is "no", but is there any way on the SE to tell the machine to show "quarter" when a quarter is found? It would be so much easier than learning the Fer/Con numbers of 00 / 29. Another question for you... How can I tell how deep the target is located by inches by using the shovel scale. I would guess that scale would be different with different sized coils? As for tones, I seem to get the same sort of tone for any metal depending on the depth of it. If I get a deep target, the tone is low. The closer the target, the higher the tone. What am I doing wrong here? mtpockets - If you do find those links you mentioned, I too would like to read them. I keep telling myself I should have gone and purchased the Whites DFX, but hopefully I did make the correct choice with the SE.

I too have an se ., i think i am learning the tones pretty good , i can tell a quarter or half by the tone most the time, and the numbers confirm it for me , 00-28 or 00-29 is a quarter ,half , the other day i went clad hunting and 17 quarters all the same tone , same numbers ,and same cursor position( high right ), dimes seem to jump from right top to left top, 03 -26, 27, and a high tone , nickles , lower tone ,10-05 is a sure nickle with the cursor at middle bottom half buried . pennys are easy. i use all metal , no discrimination , and manual sens as high as i can ,without getting jumpy. i use no discrimination , i try to let my ears tell me what is there , and i know i miss alot , or at least i think i do, not much jewlery , learning those settings . i really need to go out and hunt with a pro on the se, it would be great to have a tutor. As far as using the other settings people speak of , i have no idea , what that might be , that is where the tutor would be great help,. ,,, i can use all the advice and help i can get , so please if you read this , let me know of any help i can get

Chuck is Right on about his post...
When I first received my SE I Learned Exactly the way Chuck States... Don't mess with any settings except for Noise cancel... This may sound a little different.... But till this day I haven't even tried the Pinpoint Mode.... I just got used to pinpointing with the very Tip of the coil.. Now I picked up a Sun Ray X-1 probe and It's one killer rig... Good Luck.. My Best advise to you would be to check out the sponsors and Get yourself a Sun ray Probe... That would be the top Accessory that you need next to you Lesche digger and your "Fingernail Scrub Brush" Here are a few links from peoples sites that may offer some help.. I don't personally know the people but when I find info on the Explorer I like to save them... and read about what everyones settings are Etc etc . Hi Everyone, I would like to say from the standpoint as a Minelab dealer and user, it doesn't take 50 hours of use in the Quick Start mode to enjoy the benefits of this machine. It does take a positive attitude and the desire to want to put in steady time to learn the Explorer SE. No one can set a given time period as to how long it will take to get comfortable with it also.
The Explorer SE operates in the time domain giving you greater depth and ability to get a more accurate ID on your targets. If you think you have hunted out an area and have not used an Explorer on that area yet then try it, and you will find something that you missed almost always! The 10" coil is great and will help get that extra depth your looking for. One of the benefits of the Explorer series is that with their popularity, aftermarket coils are readily available. One will eventually be tempted to try these coils and I recommend that you do so. The Explorer SE is an awsome machine and has many useful features built into the machine. I don't feel this is a physically bulky machine myself but many complain about the weight of the instrument. I don't notice it myself but I understand if it may be a problem for others. I will complain about the LCD display used for showing the parameters and data from target responses, it is darn hard too see in some light conditions (are you reading this Minelab?). Otherwise I love this machine! Minelab's service is fantastic to say the least! They do take care of their customers. In fact they seem to be going out of their way to take care of Minelab users. The 2 year warranty really is more than that, I give away extended 2 year warranties with the purchase of the Explorer to make it 4 years total. No matter what, Minelab will take care of us! There are so many aspects of this instrument that it would take too much space to say it all. Just give one a go and you will not be unhappy with the results. God Bless everyone and happy hunting!
