Default X-Terra 50 vs Sovereign GT.....

I’m ready to buy a detector, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to a few. A couple of the models that I’m seriously looking at are the X-Terra 50, and the Sovereign-GT. If anyone out there owns or has had any experience with these units a little bit of feedback would be appreciated.

In order of importance this is what I’ll be using it for:

1) coins and relics:
a) fresh water beaches (lakes and streams).
b) heavily mineralized soils of the Sierra Nevada Mnts. (Including black sand)
c) Alkali and heavily mineralized soils of Nevada.

2) Gold:
b) heavily mineralized soils of the Sierra Nevada Mtns. (Including black sand)
c) Alkali and heavily mineralized soils of Nevada.

From what I understand (which I may be wrong about) both of these models would probably suit my purpose, but I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer.

1) Is the Sovereign GT more accurate than the X-Terra 50? If so, why?

2) Keeping in mind that I have never used a metal detector before, will one of these units be more user friendly than the other? I see that the X-50 has LCD screen. Would this be a big plus for me in that regard?

3) Durability. Would I be wrong in assuming that the X-50, with LCD would be less durable than the Sovereign GT?

Any feedback, pro or con would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Both units are pretty accurate when it comes to pinpointing . The Gt has no standard target ID meter so the X50 is better on target ID. Both are relatively durable but the GT is a bit more durable overall. They can both be used in the areas you mention with good results. The ability of the X50 to change frequencies just by changing the coil makes it better here. All in all , for you , I think you should get the X50 as it will do better for you to start out with.If you need any help let me know.

I agree with Tony the X50 would be the best choice. Since you have no detector experience that alone tells me you should go with the X50 and the 18.75 Khz coil for small gold. I hope this helps you Mike and I wish you much success! God Bless.

If it's a choice between the X Terra 50 and the Sov. Gt as your first detector i also feel the X 50 would be the best choice. I have about 40 hrs on the Xterra and perhaps 60 + hrs on the Gt and the X 50 is definately more user friendly detector with all options at your fingertips , seems to be a very solid detector ,and very easy to use all day,and pinpointing is a snap

The Sov GT is heavy and slow but has the edge on coil choices .The meter on the GT is great but the placement is terrible unless you get an offset mount or do another type mod for viewing, tones are super in my opinion. The GT is probably the superior detector when you understand all the nuances but the X Terra 50 is easier to understand and many are having great results with it and when the additional accessory coils especially "smaller or DD" continue to appear the X Terra should even be more versatile. Don't think you'll be disappointed with the X 50 and if not your cup of tea they seem to be holding resale value right now. Just my thoughts. Good luck. Bill

As a backup to the GT , the 50 is a great choice. The X70 is a better choice. If you're going relic hunting , either will be great for hunting all day . If you use Minelabs then you know that you're getting your money's worth. Let me know if any of you need more help with your decision. I have free shipping and freebies with every detector purchased.
Thanks for your time.
