Default Conductive vs Ferrous tone setting?

I was wondering what the popular consensus is on the ferrous tones vs conductive tones. I went from conductive to ferrous on advice of many Minelab SE owners, but having lots of trouble with that. To me, conductive seems much easier and is factory default.. but should I stick with ferrous?

Seems like the 'pros' use ferrous and all metal to get the good stuff. I've been working with those settings the last few days, and it's been tough. Lots of false target tones and 'iffy' signals that lead to junk.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
DB

Default ferrous

My suggestion is to stick with the ferrous and get to learn what the silver screaming at you sounds like. It takes some getting use to but that is one important key in finding the good stuff in all metal.

Since I switched to AM/Ferrous, my finds are down (0 keepers in this configuration). Not sure if it's the setting, the area, me or all three. I seem to be able to hear the targets a lot clearer in conductive with IM at 25.. but AM/Ferrous I'm having trouble. Also, I continue to see reference of silver sticking out nice in AM/Ferrous, but how are the old pennies/nickels?

Thanks!
DB

Hi DB, I think you should use the mode that your hearing can translate better for you and stay with it. I use all metal on the ferrous setting. This is much more agreeable to my hearing. But you also should consider with a 10.5 in. coil your machine is analyzing a lot of ground and targets. I put the 5.5" SunRay X5 on my SE and while it might not go quite as deep it will clean things up a bit for you. Don't get discouraged DB because you have a fine instrument there. I hope this will kelp you. God Bless DB.

Thanks guys. I think when the weather breaks, I'm going to give conduct tone a try with IM at 25 or so..

John, I have the SunRay 8", and it's really helped. I'm liking that coil over the stock 10.5" for sure.

Thanks!
DB
