Default New here with buying question

Hi,

Looks like a great site. I'm just getting interested in metal detecting....not sure where I'll go just yet, but I need a detector. Money is always an issue, but as I've already found out in my other hobby, woodworking, you usually get what you pay for. I'd rather pay once, and get something good, rather than buy several different products and find out that I have outgrown them quickly and needing to upgrade. I am not just talking about spending dollars for the "best brand", I want value for my money. That being said, I see a lot of recommendations on Ace 250(?) as good entry level. My hearing isn't as acute as it used to be. As you move up in value, what do you get.......better sound distinction, better sensitivity, more automatic controls? I saw another "ad" basically saying that White's M6 was the best thing since sliced bread. I most likely will be buying this over the internet (not many places to buy something like this locally).....please provide some direction on what to look for, dealers and so on. Thanks!

The ol' man

Welcome aboard Ol Man,

Glad to have you with us. This is a great site with a bunch of great folks. From what I have heard, the ACE 250 is a great little machine. I have never used it though.
The only detectors I have owned have been Tesoro. Nothing against the other names, it just worked out that way. I would stick with the well known brands like Whites, Minelab, Fisher, Tesoro, and Garrett (manufactures are in no particular order). I have started out with the Tesoro Compadre. It is a very basic machine, with no bells and whistles. It is very easy to operate. When I bought mine, I got the detector, headphones, and a metal stand scoop for less than $200. As far as the hearing goes, I have headphones that I use that have hearing controls on them, that might help. I know it helps me. I would however, contact the dealers here and check out the manufactures websites for more complete information. The dealers here are great folks. Hope it helps.
