Default Hello from Dallas...again

This is a second attempt to intorduce myself to this forum. Guess I was not holding my tongue right the other night.

I am nearing retirment (2/08), and following orders from the DW, I am trying to find a hobby before retirement-otherwise, no retirement. My wife follows Beth Truman's philosphy about husband retirement, "for better or worse, but never for lunch!"

Enough foolishness. I have just purchased an ACE 250-not yet unpacked-and am anxious to learn about treasure hunting. Attempted to attend my first club meeting a couple of weeks back (Golden Triangle Explorers), but hail and tornados interfered.

Any suggestions on hunting grounds near Dallas (say 100 miles). Also, I know from proper upbringing that you should secure permission to hunt on private land, but how does one approach the owner, e.g., what do you say, or not say?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

You did it - I knew you could. Welcome to the Forum and the TQ family. I am sure someone will answer your questions. I mostly hunt parks and beaches so have not asked anyone for permission yet. Start by talking with your friends and family and asking them for permission. This will give you the practice and a chance to learn what your machine is telling you. Do not get discouraged. You need to read the manual and watch the DVD and then do it again and again. Then just practice. Dig everything until you get a feel for what the sounds are. Good luck and looking forward to hearing about your finds. JoAnne

JoAnne,

Thank you for your instructions. Travel for the next week, but expect to read about your find of a cache of gold coins upon return!

Default Welcome Orion

To TQ! I think public places where your allowed to hunt is a good starting point to get to know your detector. As far as Private land, you could start by finding out if a freind or family member may know them and go thru them or with them to approach the owner. I think most people have their own approach or technique. As for myself, if it was a really juicy looking area and it was someone that I would see out on the property on a regular basis, I would stop and strike up a conversation about how nice it looks or how well they take care of it or whatever you think may open the door a little. I would not bring up detecting on it the first time or two, get them to want to tell you about the place then I would talk about my interest and go from there. If you have a 2nd detector or can borrow one you could try to see if he would like to look for something old or valuable or both with you. If not that, you could offer to share what you find. Like I said, everyone has a different approach. be creative and interesting to who your talking to & the odds are better that you'll get permission. Always be curteous whether they say yes or no because if you can get them to warm up to you, a No now could be a Yes later. I'm sure you'll get other idea's from here. There are alot of good and helpful folks here. Good Luck & HH

The TINMAN

Welcome! I have limited experience hunting anywhere but my yard, so I am eager to see the answers to your valuable questions as well. From what I have read you have a great machine to start with (and keep with). I myself am a Texas transplant, born and raised 18 yrs there. You definitely have plenty of state to search.
Best of luck and good to have you here!

Default Hello Dallas from Ft Worth area.

Didn't see your earlier post but then again, with all these storms we been having out here I try to limit my pc usage to minimum. My last 'puter got zapped during a t'storm and I learned my lesson..

What area of Dallas are you at?? That will determine a lot of likely places for you to hunt locally without having to drive a long ways. The public beaches at Lewisville Lake have always been good to me and some of the recreational spots off Hubbard. Also where some of the older neighborhoods are being razed for apartments are good spots to look. Especially if a dozer has made a pass or two through there.

Good luck and hang in there..

James

Default Not the Competition

No Dooby,

I am not your competition at Lake Lewisville.. I have yet to make it that way this year.. I've been busy MD'ing certain spots around Eagle Mountain and a couple of old settler crossings on the Brazos..

For future reference though, the City of Ft. Worth dumped several illegal slot machines several different times in Lake Worth (Lake) during the late 40's all throughout the 50's and 60's.

Seems Jacksboro Highway was the site of several illegal gambling spots and several of the original buildings they were housed in were torn down. Jacksboro Hwy (199) was the main drag for gambling and all sorts of illicit activities in the FTW area. If anyone is interested in these locations, give me a private message and I will share the info I have.
