Default Hey All

Hi there,

I'm new to the hobby, just got my Garret Ace 250 last night. I'm glad I've found several forums to be apart of, and can't wait to really get going.

I found a key in my back yard and a quarter at the local sand lot today. I know it's not a lot, but it's a start!

Was wondering if there was anyone from the Los Angeles area on here? I live in the San Fernando Valley and was hoping to get some tips about the area. I have been trying to look up the history of the area, but it certainly is not as old as back East.

JP

Welcome to TQ, Gourownway. I'm in southern OC and I would say that it's gonna be pretty difficult to find really old places. Everything old is either protected or has been torn down and built over. Parks are good, though, because EVERYTHING is watered out here. Just call your parks and recreation people for the different cities to make sure they allow MDing. Most of them will just laugh because they've never heard anyone ask that question, but that's good news. Either nobody asks or there aren't that many detectorists in the area. I would bet they're all at the beach.

I also have an Ace 250, so the beach won't be the BEST place to hunt. I sure did get a good tip from Chuck (one of the site's sponsors at Treasure Hut). He said that since our machine has the auto ground balance, we should not search parallel to the water. We should search going towards the water, so the auto ground balance has an even sampling of the ground conditions. It was an eye opener to me. I wasn't even thinkin' about that.

Anyway, HH and Good Luck!!!

Thanks everybody for the warm welcomes!

Pris: Thanks for the tips! Although I would LOVE to find something old, I would be happy just finding anything! I have hit one park so far, and have been thinking about the beach. I know most people say the Ace 250 doesn't work to well there, but I"m glad to learn that tip you gave me.

THE ACE 250 HAS A PRESET FIXED GROUND BALANCE. I WISH IT WAS AT LEAST MANUALLY ADJUSTED BY THE USER.
