Default Good Upgrade or something else? Long Post!

Hey all Beale here. I have a question to ask about detectors. Like I said in my introduction post I am a newb. I have been reading a bunch about metal detectors and looking at the various forums, also manufacture sites. I even called and talked to Tony, one of the sponsors on here.

I have a el cheapo Radio Shack detector right now. I have found a few coins with it so I will use it until I get my real detector in a couple of months.

I am in centeral NC (Burlington) and will be doing most of my hunting around here. I will make trips to the coast also to beach hunt. I am looking for pretty much anything from coins to relics to rings.

Right now for my price range ($500) I am looking at the Tesoro Cibola. I have gotten several good recomendations on this model and want to make sure I am getting a good detector.I also do not want to get one that will be to hard to learn.

Just want to get some input on this. I know that not one detector will do it all, but is the Cibola a good start? Thanks in advance, Beale.

Default Detector For A Newbie....................

ECBIII, any of the machines in that price range should do you good! Always make sure that optional coils smaller and larger than the stock coils are available! Are you mainly Coin Huntin?, Ring hunting?,Relic Hunting? Do you want a Target ID meter? Audio ID?, or both or none at all? I do a little bit of everything so my detector does not need a TID meter as long as it goes deep or can isolate the good targets from the trash targets! Weight may be a factor as some detectors are a lot heavier than others! I believe that most of the Tesoro detectors are worth the time and money!!!................................HH........ ......Joe

Hey thanks for the answers. I have continued my research, and my budget. I am now actually looking at the X-Terra 70. I like the idea of a visual display, and seems to be a good all round unit.

I will be mostly coin hunting, with some jewelry and relic thrown in to boot. I want a good all round unit.

Thanks to all for the help. I talked to John (sponsor) a long time on the phone. He really helped a bunch, thanks John, Beale.
