Default Trashy = Virgin?

Im still new to detecing and still learning my SE. I been doing more research than hunting but today was a nice day so I thought I hit the local park for fun and practice.

I have been avoiding the local parks, thinking they would be hunted out already, but I need the practice. I noticed the park seem trashy which can be expected alot of old bottle caps, old pull tabs and such.

Is it safe to say since im digging up older bottle caps and pull tabs that any good detectorists may have not hunted the area and maybe good stuff yet to find? or they just ignored those readings and moved on? Whatever I find I collect and dispose of I dont want to hit the same junk target again.

From my research some pull tabs are in range of good items and bottle caps I dug up where right in the silver range so it makes me think no one has been hunting the area.

Im I right in my way of thinking or it can be either way?

I think most hunters would agree that sites are never really ever hunted out. There is always something to find.

A lot of it is technique and learning your machine. Everyone has to start that way and it is just part of teh experience. You will get better at finding things as you get time in. There are people here who have hunted a particular place for years and they are still pulling great stuff out of the ground.

Persistence pays.

ditto to what Pappy said. I don't think you can hunt them out either. Good luck in your hunts.

Here's my way of thinking......no matter what the screen, meter, or tone in the headphones say........there is only one way of knowing 100% for sure what's under your coil, and that's to dig it.

I disagree with most, Take my town for an example, I have learned that we had a hand full of hard core addicted fans of MDing have came thru and cleaned out this town I have seen the stuff; its a bit disharting. Good for them tho.. Its just Dishearting to me because i spent so much on my machine just to find Clad??
If your looking for pre '30 or 40 silver, your better off buying them vs time and money spent on finding them. This disagreement is about coins only. when it comes Jewelry and relics I cant speak about much other than to say if I cant liquidate my finds then it is not valuable to me. so that leave jewelry, which I havent found much of at all, most because I don't dig the pull tabs numbers like I should...
I have gotten on ground that hadn't been detecting for about 10 yrs and trust me you know it right off the bat. Everyone- Everyone goes to the school and parks to practice...

I want to mention that Soil moves and it moves in trucks loads per yr. As a x Golf Course Superintendent I know and seen. so maybe a coin that for whatever reason that wasn't detectable, might now be possible because of washing. That would be my only exception to old coins laying in the dirt for 70+ yrs. Now can someone in 2008 that might have a 1806 half dollar in his pocket and developed a hole in his pocket and lose it?? Yes this can happen..
I have learned that some will detect you yard while your asleep, very brave and very unlawful folks doing this as well. Don't be nieve, if you thought of it, I bet a crisp 100 bill that someone else have thought of it too!
Someone once told me the only way to have success is to lower your standards! This may be true and should be marketed as such and a warning label needs to be attached on the MD box- " warning: your luckily if you can wheaties in the 21ft century." Quite simply, you have to wait and watch for ground that hasn't been hunted for 50 yrs. this is very possible...in many places... but not in parks or at schools for the most part.
Unless, If you have a lot of connection and many people to ask, you may find it not worth it in about 6mo. Dont forget the Dork factor- which I have for some strange reason, You cant belive how bad I have it. The moment I go to stick the lil scope in the dirt I feel like Barney walking down the middle of the street. I determind to get to the bottom of this Issue in my personiality.in Short- I guess I feel like Im stealing somthing..
In fairness, I use to feel this way even at the local school, But I am much more comfortable at schools that near my home, however as soon as I get on new soil they apprehension set back in. It may be not knowing whether its going end up; someone telling me leave.
I have to take this vantage point, I'm ok with Clad and a possible jewelry finds, if I happen to stumble over something pre 65, that's just icing on the cake. Take som time and invest it to looking for old abandon homes, as these can be great fun and exceptions. In closeing Im not trying to be a downer, just shooting stright with ya.. and again my exsperinces is in no way everyone exsperinces for sure!

I believe also no site is ever hunted out. I used to detect allot with a guy up in Delaware. He would find all kinds of things. I mean Indian Heads, Silver and coins all the time. He was really good. Still is good. Anyway he lived in the house next to mine on base housing. After he moved out I hunted in front of his old housing unit. Just to see. Found some old coins and a religious metal metal right by his door. Man this guy is so good but he missed a few. I know he had gone over that yard lots of times. Everybody misses stuff. That is why no place is ever hunted out. I still find wheats in my front yard here in Florida. I know I have gone over it and over it. Still I pull out coins. Just keep practicing and do your research on the older sites. Check the back forms for ideas. They can help.. Also again. rings and such sometimes ring off as pull tabs and bottle caps. It pays to dig all signals just to see what they are... But remember to have fun at this hobby. Happy Hunting..Buster.....

Go with your instincts...if you're seeing older trash items - then it stands to reason that there are coins and other goodies from the same time period in the area. If it's been heavily hunted by other MD'ers - the good finds may be fewer in number - but I guarantee there is still some good stuff there. Good luck and happy hunting!

I hear ya, Its always nice to find Silver but right now I will be happy with some Wheats. I cant say for sure if my parks have seen heavy MD activity or not. I have seen two people MD in other areas and by the way they where swinging it looks to me they where interested in the surface clad and any dropped jewelry. As far as pull tabs since its in the range of other goodies I know I will just have to dig them to be sure.

My town history goes back to the 1840's and plenty of promising places if I can get to them, the parks included my park has a creek and other areas that maybe the average MD not bothered with, wishful thinking? maybe.

I realized that if I don't try I will really never know for sure so I will be hunting my parks as much as possible when Im not hunting a more promising site. You never know can get lucky.
