Default How do I use it???

Hey all
My grandfather just gave me his old metal detector and I haven't got the slightest idea as to how it works
I know that when it beeps that means that it has found something, but I how do I guess about how deep to dig and what I could possibly be digging for
I don't even know what all the knobs are for ;.;
The detector is a RadioShack Discovery 3000
It has a Sensitivity knob
A Disc/Notch knob
Volume
Then it has a pres for target mode which has the options
All Metal, Disc, Notch, Auto Notch, and Ground Track
This thing goes kind beep crazy around an oak outside but I don't know what it is going crazy over

If any one can shed even the smallest sliver of light on this for me I would love it

(The reason I'm posting this here and not asking my grandfather is because he forgot how to use it) ~.~

Welcome to TQ! I sure hope you can figure out how to use the machine. I've seen other people on here with that model, I think. I sure hope someone can give you some advice.

For now, though, read and re-read that user's manual. It will help you out a bunch.

I say if it beeps around metal and it was free...use it! Heck, that's the best way to save up for a new machine, right? I have an Ace250, so I haven't used the machine you have. I'm sure someone with tell you their opinions...

Hi Kat,Welcome to TQ.I dont really know your detector but what you might want to do is a little reasearch.Go online and look around at different detectors then decide.Myself I like to buy the top of the line when I can but there are many low end detectors like the ace 250 that I would recomend.I'm sure that the Bounty hunter's are ok,my first was a BH but they in my opinion are the low of the low end detectors.Good luck & HH !

Hey Kat WELCOME to TQ. I believe pris is right that there are a few Folks here that use that make & model detector. I'm sure if they see this post they will chime In. I would Give that one a Go first just to get the understanding of the settings and how it works as even if Ya buy something New , your gonna have some learning to do. As long as It's FREE Why not give it a Shot until Ya can do a little research into the Different detectors that are available.Talk to our Sponsors here as They can help out . How much do Ya want to spend ? Alot will depend on what kind of detecting you want to do... Coins..Relics ...Beach & Water Hunting...Gold Hunting, Plus what are your ground Conditions where You are at or where you are gonna hunt ? Do Ya want a Detector with or without Visual ID.. Pre-Set Ground Balance..Manual ground Balance and so on and so on. If Ya ask anyone, One of the HARDEST Things to do is to Pick what detector Ya want and as You'll see some folks have several. No ONE detector will do It All Greatly unless they are a Specific Detector for a specific type of Hunting and then even there the Opinions will vary. Alot of Detectors are Multi-Purpose so it can be Mind Boggling. In my Opinion, I would give the 3000 a go just to get the feel of what detectin is all about. ASK ALL the Questions Ya Want and don't be Shy as Thats what we are here for and have ALL been in your shoes at one time or another. Glad to have Ya here and Ya Came to a GREAT Place to learn about detectors & this Hobby !

Good Luck & HH
