Awkward?
I have just started detecting and have only been out a few times, however when I have been out I seem to feel awkward when people watch me or come up to me while I am detecting. Is this normal and or is it just me because I am new at this? I have only been out a few time so maybe I am just being oversensitive. Thanks for any ideas on how to get over this awkwardness.

It is very normal. I mean you have a big ole long detector, maybe headphones, a digger, maybe kneepads? Heck I felt like a space invader the first few times. Now? No it goes away with time, Beale.

Welcome to the forum Firerescue1965! Good first question! I think it's natural to feel awkward but once you start to hunt, it goes away. I sometimes get it at a new location. I go about my business getting ready and get to hunting quick. Some people think throwing a plastic disc around the park is fun, other people like to hit little white balls around. I usually pick up a bit of trash and drop it off near my car when I take a break to be tossed after the hunt. Just in case I get questioned by anyone, it looks better if you are doing something good there. The grassy areas of the parks in my area need to be aerated anyway. The kids must think I'm there officially or just some crazy guy. I have never been a "keep up with the Jones" type guy so I really don't care what anyone thinks about me. I am defintely not unfriendly, I already have plenty of friends. I'm just there to enjoy the park my taxes pay for like everyone else. We may just have different ideas of fun. Good luck to you!
