Default thanks for the input

I have a tone machine ( i think thats right ) it only makes four tones. It doesnt whisper. And with tests it can make all four tones w/ the same coin, depending on depth and angle, Hence dig it all. I have not checked but i would assume the vid would be different each time also. You are all correct w/ the recovery time i did not think of that when i posted. So i guess i'm looking for a machine that will talk to me more ( whispers and crackling sounds ) I was looking at tesoros, and i was thinking of getting away from vids. Thanks for all the imput.\

Hey SUPRA... All Great points ! The Tesoros have some fast recovery speeds. You did not mention what Your Hunting. Coin hunting only, Hitting the sand or wanting to Relic hunt a little. If your gonna do one kind of hunting specificly then some Detectors will be more suited to your needs than others and just reverse if ya wanna hunt different things. Talk with the Sponsors here and Post as many questions as Ya Have. Just remember that No Matter what Ya get, It's only as Good as what you learn by what it is saying to ya. Lot of experienced hands here at TQ that can cover different kind of Detectors and hunting Info.

Good Luck & HH !

Hey Supra i have heard very good things about the Tesoro's. I would like to have one myself. If I had to choose one it might just be the Vaquero. I hear it hits real deep, and has some quick recovery time. Good luck to you, Beale.

This is why I really like this fourm. Once in a while someone asks a question that I would think of asking, but had been afraid too.

If u get an Ace 250 Or any other detector they have different tones for different objects..The Ace 250 has a special coin signal..And many others have special tones for coins or gold.. With my Ace i plan on digging everything Since the places i hunt won't be trashy

Lightbulb Deep Thoughts... by Robert Chapman - VID, or NOT to VID

OK, here's how I see it.... (and nevermind that I just got another 1266-X!)...

It's really all about how you like to be surprised... right? Some folks like the VID and audio tones, depth meters, etc., but what sets them apart is that they like to have an idea of what their digging before they recover it...

...it's kinda like shaking and weighing all the Christmas presents* before you open them to maybe guess what's inside...

On the other hand, you have guys like me that seem to relish in the complete surprise of making the find.

Now, I realize that even without VID, and audio ID, etc., I intrinsically (and sometimes successfully, to some degree) identify what I'm digging in my head.

The real difference in V/A-ID, etc., vs. the single-tone, "analog" type signal machines (old-school as I like to say ) is that with the "analog" machine, the identification is somewhat more vague. Say you get a signal and it says "penny". A penny signal to that machine could indeed mean it's a penny - and most of the time, it probably is. It could, however, also very well be a dime, maybe a quarter, sometimes a ring, or even a piece of #%@$# - you have no way of knowing for sure unless you dig it. But, the VID tells you it's a penny, and also tells you it's 5" deep. So that's what you're thinking you'll find. If it is a penny, you're happy - if it's a silver dime, you're still happy. If it's a piece of #%@$#, you're .

Now, that being said, say you get the same signal from that exact same target using an "analog" machine... (For those of us familiar with these types, a Fisher 1266-X will do for this example...) You get a "good" signal... By the sound alone, you also infer that it's a) somewhat of a coin-sized object (ferrous or not depending on your discrimination), and b) approximately 5" deep (again for sake of this example).

That's it.

But, to me, I see a limited amount of information as nothing more than a heck'uva lot more fun! Granted, you can be just as disappointed seeing "dime" on your VID and actually digging a penny, as you could hearing a sweet signal with your Fisher, thinking it's a silver dime, when it's actually a copper penny. As in the earlier example, if I'm thinking "penny" and it's a penny, I'm somewhat satisfied. If it turns out to be a silver dime, hey! And if it's a piece of #%@$#, well I'm still .

It's all really in how we value and process information... some of us are analytical (seeking and processing information to a logical end), and some (like me) are subjective - they tend to like to imagine, rather than predict.

We're still happy if at the end, we've detected and recovered the same targets.

So, really, like all of life - it's as simple as we want to make it. I simply prefer to only know that I'm getting a present, not necssarily what it is.

*For the record, I may have, theoretically, once, used a hypothetical razor blade to open a present before Christmas morning...

Thumbs up Dig it All!

I have an XLT, and one of my friends had the cheapest One whites had. He Won every coin hunt, always had the Best finds of the Month, best find of the Years Awards. Always found the best stuff when we went relic hunting. So if you dig everything You will come out ahead. Not me though lol.

I think some consideration needs to be made at what you are digging for. As for me I am a coin shooter probally always will be. For me depths of 8+ inches really do not mean much because truthfully I don't recall ever digging more then 6 or so inches to find what I hunt for. I kind of eqate it with every other piece of machinery because that is what your detector is. It is a machine and between all the manufactures they make certain models that excell at certain things. Underwater, gold, relic, coins, and then all around use.

I guess you can use off road vehicles for an example. You have a Ford
Ecscape and a Jeep Wrangler. Both are 4 wheel drive. Both will go off road. But if you were climbing up rock mountain roads I think the Jeep would do a better job.

Same for your detector some just seem to excell better then others depending on what you are hunting for. The thing is when your machine beeps it has hit on a target. It then is up to you to decide if the target is good or bad. I know one thing if I were looking for aluminum cans, pull tabs or bottle caps I would be a pro in this sport.

Default One other thing

One other thing I learned yesterday was that sometimes what you want is down there wrapped up with what you don't want.
I found a Medal in my back yard yesterday buried right on top of an aluminum can top. It read just like the other tops I found, but I dug it up any way because I'm clearing the area. But what came up surprised me!

I also dug a Low Iron target and went down about 8" on a depth reading of 1" and pulled up a toy brass cannon. I thought is was another old coffee can!

It's going to take some time and experience to get to know this machine, but also to get to know the site I'm digging. By yard has two layers, the new layer of sod that has all kinds of old trash items in it, and the deeper old layer, that has relics.

There's a spot in the tot lot accross the street that reads like a foot and a half long penny. I suspect that if I dig it, I will be going down about a foot to an old copper pipe, But I won't know until I dig it!

So, as a newb I guess I gotta dig everything!
