Default Help Me Dig, Please

Hey Hunters, went for my first hunt today. I hit the beach and found some coins and crap, but enjoyed it alot. (can't wait for next day off)
I am having trouble digging what I detect. I get a good 'repeatable' signal, for instance, a nickle 6 inches down...I use the 'X' technique, I think I zero in on my target, I begin to dig, and nothing! I sweep the detector over my so-called target and it seems to be there, so I dig some more, and nothing. This happened a few times today. I know I need to learn my machine and what it is telling me, but any tips from the experienced will help greatly.

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the BH, but some things that you could try would be to dig the hole, and re-scan it.

Dig until the target is no longer in the hole and then scan where you put the sand. It's possibly that it's a very small piece of lead or jewelry or something that you can't easily see.

Anyway, pinpoint it the best that you can and then when you think you know where it is carefully pick up a handful of sand and run it past the coil. Do this until you get a beep and then carefully sift through it.

I've had to do that several times on very small things. Keep in mind also that very large targets may read as shallower than they are and very small ones may read as deeper than they are.

You can also practice your pinpointing. Get a big ole piece of cardboard. Put some various items under it with tape. Put them in random places. Flip it over and try pinpointing. Also try to tell what you are hitting.

I did this and used a dart to poke through the cardboard. It helped a bunch, Beale.

Don't want to make you spend some more money but a probe would come in handy in those kinds of situations.

if your hunting on the beach, then a good beach scoop will speed your recovery time.....

A long handle one is the best....

Dont
meen
to hijack this thread, but do you guys use a long handled scoop even in the dry sane, or just waiding?

To the
original
poster. A
pinpointer
as suggested would
helo
you allot. Also, check the sides of your holes
incase
you missed at pinpointing.

A pinpointer helps in situations like this..

If your "diggings" are close to the hole and you have your treasure in the diggings, it can fool you . X-ing isn't that precise.
