What Beale said and also if it has a sensitivity control, you can turn it on with no metal around and set the sensitivity so it doesn't activate until it approaches metal. Sometimes though, it may false when you poke it into the dirt not even near your target, in which case you have to turn the sensitivity down a hair.
The way I use mine (Tinytec) is to dig the hole and if the target is still in there, swirl the probe around the bottom of the hole and work up around the sides. Usually only the tip and maybe an inch up are the only areas that will pick up metal. You can usually expect about an inch of depth from them, some a little more and some a little less.
