Construction or land clearing can also act against you. If they have scraped the top 6" of soil off a piece of land the majority of the stuff went with the dirt they took away. It also depends on the type of soil where you live, sandy loose soil will allow coins to sink deeper faster, while clay soil like where I live tend to hold the items closer to the surface.
