Greetings,
So, for the fourth day in a row I've spent at least an hour playing with my detector (and my arm and wrist are not happy). I've gotten better at pin pointing and I think i've got the ground balance down. Still working on the SPD setting, it *should* ignore ferrous items and only hit on nonferrous, but in order to work right I have to swing it quite fast, and I'm not so good at that. ![]() My question now pertains to the "all metal" setting. Usually I get good strong reads over iron and not much else, but while searching around the tree in my front yard I keep getting null signals. These seemed really odd since I was on all metal. So I dug for three of these nulls. I found three rocks? that have no distinct shape, colors, or markings. Any idea what they could be and why they make the machine go null? If it helps, I'm using a Bounty Hunter Outlaw 290 (which I still am looking for information on) Happy Hunting, Amberly |

i find i get that on the beach a lot! and the rocks are granite type so i presume they must have a metallic mineral content; i also get the same signals from such things as charcoal?? where people have had BBQs, my arm used to hurt at first and i used to try and swap arms, but i reckon its just getting used to it as im ok now. i do get a bit of a backache sometimes though must be my age! lol! i do think though that swinging too fast might lose you some good finds. it might be a good idea to dig a few holes and put in certain metals in each hole iron, copper, silver and gold! (mark them so you know where each item is) and then try to discriminate them on your machine to ignore what you dont want. i mainly ignore iron. aluminium will give a good a signal as a coin so if you set to ignore it you may lose out on good finds hence why we dig a lot of it!! hope this is of some help

Amberly I believe they changed the name on some of the bounty hunters. You may have to call the company for info or go to this site and see if one of the detectors is like the one you have.
www.detecting.com click on products and then click on download manuals if I have that right. Hope this helps Pat |

Your machine is at least 15 years old. The current Bounty Hunter Co. may not have a manual for it since they bought out the previous company. I'd check out Keith Wills of Montgomery, Texas he has manuals for most of the older machines! The SPD mode was an early form of motion discrimination which had to be run fast for it to discriminate properly. It tired out many people and many converted their units over to hip mounts to take the weight off their arms. Hope this helps???!!!
